A story of love, family and hope

Julianne Moore, Maria Shriver, Kristen Stewart, Sandy Oltz, Lisa Genova, Dr. Maria Carrillo, Elizabeth Gelfand Stearns—these are some of the amazing women behind "Still Alice," a movie that gives us a rare window into the experience of living with Alzheimer's disease—a glimpse of the inside looking out.

Dr. Alice Howland (Julianne Moore), a renowned linguistics professor, starts to forget words. When she receives a diagnosis of younger-onset Alzheimer's disease, Alice and her family (daughter played by Kristen Stewart) find their bonds thoroughly tested. Her struggle to stay connected to who she once was is frightening, heartbreaking and inspiring.
From the beginning of the screenwriting process, women have been remarkable catalysts for bringing the story of “Still Alice” to life. From Maria Shriver as an executive producer to a myriad of Alzheimer's Association experts and volunteers, including individuals living with Alzheimer's disease, women worked behind-the-scenes guiding both script and character development. Alzheimer's Association Chief Science Officer, Maria Carrillo, Ph.D., advised on the script to help ensure scientific accuracy. Alzheimer's Association National Early-Stage Advisor Sandy Oltz, who was diagnosed with younger-onset Alzheimer's at age 46, provided Julianne Moore with an understanding of her daily experience.
By giving a frank and open portrayal of just how devastating Alzheimer's is to a person's emotional and physical well-being; family and career; and all other facets of life, our hope is "Still Alice" will move more people join the fight against Alzheimer's.
"Still Alice" is beautiful, frightening and powerful, and a reminder that Alzheimer's needs to be addressed now. With women at the epicenter—both more likely to have Alzheimer’s and more likely to be caring for those with the disease—the Alzheimer's Association and the women of "Still Alice" ask all women to help wipe out Alzheimer's.

Gunmen attack Paris magazine Charlie Hebdo's offices killing at least twelve

At least 12 dead after three gunmen walk into building in Paris and open fire before fleeing in a getaway car

At least 12 people are dead after three hooded gunmen armed with Kalashnikovs attacked the headquarters of a French satirical magazine and opened fire on journalists and police guards.
The three men - described by a police union spokesman as “commandos” – are on the run after walking into the offices of Charlie Hebdo in Paris’s 11th arrondissement at about midday on Wednesday and fleeing in a getaway car driven by a fourth.
The death toll includes 10 journalists and two police officers. At least five people are seriously injured.
Rocco Contento, a spokesman for the Unité police union, said “it was a real butchery” in the building. He said the Charlie Hebdo offices were guarded and protection was increased in recent weeks because of fresh threats against the magazine, but the attackers had entered the building intending to kill.
Charlie Hebdo’s offices were firebombed in 2011 after a spoof issue featuring a caricature of the prophet Mohammed on its cover.
Contento said the attackers had got into a getaway car driven by a fourth man on fleeing the building, and drove to Porte de Pantin in north-east Paris, where they abandoned the first car and hijacked a second – turning the driver out into the road.
The French president, François Hollande, headed to the scene of the attack and the government said it was raising the security level to the highest level. “This is a terrorist attack, there is no doubt about it,” he told reporters. Newspaper offices, shopping centres, museums and stations have been placed under police protection.
Witnesses working in the building opposite heard shots as the attack began and saw a police officer “between life and death” lying on the road outside.
Streets were closed off around the building in the aftermath of the shooting and a few hundred metres away on the Boulevard Richard-Lenoir a police car’s windscreen was riddled with bullet holes.
In 2008, Charlie Hebdo was criticised for running Danish cartoons caricaturing the Prophet Mohammed. The magazine defended the publication in the name of freedom of expression.

Pakistan 'to execute 500 militants' after Taliban Peshawar school massacre in which 133 children were killed

Pakistan is to execute 500 militants after lifting a moratorium on the death penalty in the wake of the Peshawar school massacre.
Last week, 133 children were killed by gunmen wearing suicide vests at the Army Public School in Peshawar, sparking international outrage and demands in Pakistan for a tougher response to the Taliban.
The day after the attack, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif lifted the moratorium on executions in terror cases.
A senior government official today told the AFP news agency on condition of anonymity that Pakistan had "finalised the cases of 500 convicts who have exhausted all the appeals".
He said the executions would take place in the coming weeks.
On Friday, Pakistan hanged two convicted "terrorists" and another four yesterday. It is only the second time the death penalty has been used since 2008, when a moratorium was imposed.
Officials said the “brutal killers” admitted the killing of 148 people during the school attack was an act that had “finally brought them to the gallows".
The Taliban said it will avenge the deaths of the hanged men.
Shuja Khanzada, Punjab’s home minister, told The Associated Press over the weekend: “We have started these executions by hanging two terrorists. The executions of terrorists will boost the morale of the nation, and we are planning to hang more terrorists next week.”
But human rights organisations including Amnesty International have raised concerns about the death penalty after years of allegations of poor police investigations and the use of torture to obtain confessions. There are an estimated 8,000 people on death row.
“As horrific as the attack on the Peshawar school was, more killings - this time by the government - is never the answer to combating terrorism and crime," he added.
Last Tuesday, Taliban gunmen stormed a military-run school and killed 148 people, including 133 children, in an eight-hour siege.
The militants said they attacked the school in revenge for an army operation against them, when the government bombed Taliban hideouts along the Afghan border.

AirAsia Flight 8501: Pilots Cut Power To Critical Computers Shortly Before Crash: Report

The pilots of AirAsia Flight 8501 cut power to a critical computer system designed to prevent the aircraft going out of control a short time before the plane crashed in the Java sea Dec. 28, according to people with direct knowledge of the investigation into the crash, cited in a Bloomberg report.
The decision to cut power to the computers was reportedly a factor in causing the crash. The sources said that the pilots were attempting to address alerts from other flight control computers, and subsequently cut power to the entire system, which comprises two separate computers that back each other up.
An aviation safety consultant told Bloomberg that Airbus, the manufacturer of the aircraft in question, an A320, discourages pilots from cutting power to systems, as the aircraft is highly dependent on its computer systems, and one component of the system can affect others.
Questions about the flight's final moments still remain, but significant information about those last seconds has come to light in recent days.
Yesterday it was revealed that that Flight 8501's relatively inexperienced first officer was at the aircraft's controls when it made what investigators described as an “unbelievably” steep climb, ascending 5,000 feet in just 30 seconds.
Such a rate of climb is outside the performance envelope of the A320. It is believed that the climb may have slowed the aircraft to the extent that its wings ceased to generate lift.
"It is not normal to climb like that. It's very rare for commercial planes, which normally climb just 1,000 to 2,000 feet per minute," Indonesia's transport minister, Ignasius Jonan, told the BBC. "It can only be done by a fighter jet," he added.
The first officer, Rémi-Emmanuel Plesel, had just over 2,200 hours of logged flight experience, while captain Iriyanto had more than 20,000 hours.
Data from the aircraft's black box recorders has given investigators a “pretty clear picture” of what happened in its final moments, according to Reuters.
Indonesian search and rescue teams recently suspended an operation that was attempting to lift the aircraft's fuselage from the sea floor using balloons. The wreckage is reportedly too fragile to be lifted and authorities believe that no bodies remain inside.

Taiwan 'Gutter Oil' Scandal: Hundreds Of Products Banned By Health Officials

A tainted-oil scandal in Taiwan could result in a shortage of groceries, and could even affect large international companies including Starbucks. Taiwan’s Food and Drug Administration has announced it will pull all products linked to the Chang Guann Co, effective Saturday morning.
Earlier this week, the company was found to be selling lard-based oil, normally used for industrial products, as a foodstuff. According to Want China Times, a Taiwanese newspaper, Chang Guann purchased the oil from a Hong Kong trading company, Globalway Corp.
According to the South China Morning Post of Hong Kong, 14 of the listed products are also items that have been sold overseas, in places like Brazil, France, Hong Kong, mainland China, Macau, New Zealand, Singapore and the United States. In addition, more than 1,000 companies are reported to have been affected by the substandard oil, including global retail chains like Starbucks (NASDAQ:SBUX) and 7-Eleven. Local health bureaus across Taiwan will reportedly be sending inspectors to ensure all listed products have been removed. The Taiwan FDA announced that stores continuing to sell such products would face a fines up to 3 million Taiwanese dollars, which is equivalent to just under $100,000 U.S.
In an effort to clear shelves of compromised food supplies, Taiwan’s FDA deputy director-general Chiang Yu-mei said an initial list of 249 food products affected by the tainted oil supply will be pulled from grocery shelves.
According to the health authority, the comprehensive recall of all Chang Guann-related products could lead to a temporary shortage of some food supplies in Taiwanese groceries as stocks are replaced with safe food.
Chang Guann reportedly imported a total of 87 tons of oil that was illegally relabeled to be fit for human consumption. Branded as Chuan Tung Fragrant Lard Oil, the product, which is a combination of recycled kitchen waste oil and lard, was sold to roughly 1,256 retail businesses.
Chang Guann’s vice president Tai Chin-chuan is being investigated for his alleged role in the tainted oil supply, but was released on Thursday on bail as the probe continues. On the same day, Chang Guann’s president, Yeh Wen-hsiang, held a press conference, where he apologized for the scandal and drank a cup of the oil to prove it was not harmful to humans. Chang Guann is maintaining that they were unaware that the oil supply provided by Globalway was not suitable for human consumption.

Japan Mount Ontake volcano: Death toll reaches 47

Rescue workers in Japan have recovered more bodies from Mount Ontake, bringing to 47 the number of those killed by Saturday's volcanic eruption. The search resumed despite fears of toxic gases and another eruption. The number of those unaccounted for is unknown but estimates say hundreds were at the summit at the time. Dozens were injured by falling debris.
Since then, volcanic tremors have been continuously detected with smoke still coming out of the volcano. Police had earlier put the latest death toll at 48 but then revised it down by one. The majority of bodies found near the summit on Wednesday were hikers, according to local police. Helicopters have been used to bring the dead down from Mount Ontake.
Around 1,000 troops, police and fire fighters are involved in rescue operations. The relatives of the dead and missing are waiting for news in a town hall in the nearby area of Kiso. Danger continues Experts have warned that the eruption is ongoing. Seismologists had noticed increased seismic activity on Mount Ontake ahead of the eruption, but were still unprepared for what ensued.
The mountain, which is about 200km (125 miles) west of Tokyo, is one of Japan's 110 active volcanoes.
Its eruption on Saturday is the worst volcanic disaster in Japan for 90 years.

Taiwan gas explosion kills dozens

At least 24 people have been killed and 271 others injured when several underground gas explosions ripped through Taiwan's second-largest city overnight, hurling concrete through the air and blasting long trenches in the streets.
The series of explosions about midnight Thursday and early Friday struck a district where several petrochemical plans operate pipelines alongside the sewer system of Kaohsiung, a south-western port with 2.8 million people.
The fires were believed to have been caused by a leak of propene, a petrochemical material not intended for public use, but the source of the gas was not immediately clear, officials said.
Video from the TVBS broadcaster showed residents searching for victims in shattered storefronts and rescuers pulling injured people from the rubble of a road and placing them on stretchers while passersby helped other victims on a sidewalk. Broadcaster ETTV showed rows of large fires sending smoke into the night sky.
Four firefighters were among the 24 dead and 271 people were injured, the National Fire Agency said. The firefighters had been at the scene investigating reports of a gas leak when the explosions occurred, Taiwan's Central News Agency reported.
At least five blasts shook the city, said Taiwan's Premier Jiang Yi-huah.
Hundreds more injured as streets of Kaohsiung are ripped open by petrochemical pipeline blast

Chang Jia-juch, the director of the Central Disaster Emergency Operation Center, said the leaking gas was most likely to be propene, meaning that the resulting fires could not be extinguished by water. He said emergency workers would have to wait until the gas was burnt away.
The source of the leak was unknown. Chang said, however, that propene was not for public use and that it was a petrochemical material.
The Kaohsiung mayor, Chen Chu, said several petrochemical companies had pipelines built along the sewage system in Chian-Chen district, which has both factories and residential buildings. "Our priority is to save people now. We ask citizens living along the pipelines to evacuate," Chen told TVBS television.
Power was cut off in the area, making it difficult for firefighters to search for others who might be buried in rubble.
Channel NewsAsia said the local fire department received reports from residents of gas leakage at about 8.46pm and explosions started around midnight.
Closed-circuit television showed an explosion rippling through the floor of a motorcycle parking area, hurling concrete and other debris through the air. Mobile phone video captured the sound of an explosion as flames leapt at least nine metres (30ft) into the air.
One of the explosions left a large trench running down the center of a road, edged with piles of concrete slabs torn apart by the force of the blast. A damaged motorcycle lay in the crater and TVBS showed cars flipped over. The force of the initial blast also felled trees lining the street.
